Big Canoe Bocce’ Is A Blast!

I’ll bet that few people outside of the Big Canoe community know that Big Canoe has a Bocce’ league. And I’ll bet that few people inside Big Canoe know that the number of people who play in the league has tripled since it was organized less than 3 years ago.  For those of you who are asking, “What’s Bocce’?,” here’s a brief description: Bocce’ is pronounced bachee, the same as the Italian word “baci” which means kiss. It is an old Italian game played by teams of four at either end of a long narrow boxed-in court. Each team has four colored balls and there is one small white ball called the “polino”. The team that gets the most colored balls closest to–or “kisses”–the polino, wins. Getting the balls close or knocking the opponents’ balls away takes more skill than you’d think!

White Polino and Bocce Balls

On July 20, nearly 100 players and spectators gathered at the Wildcat Recreation Center for the second annual guys vs gals Bocce’ tournament.  To combat the 90-degree weather, players came equipped with hats, sunscreen, shade tents, lots of cold beer, and a determination to beat the opposite sex teams.

When there is a question about which balls are closest to the polino, the team captains converge to “scientifically” measure the distances with a string attached to a tin can.  The can is carefully positioned over the polino, and the string is stretched to the balls in question to compare the distances. After two or three remeasures to satisfy the skeptics, the winning team is declared for that round. In league play, the first team to score 17 points wins the game.

Since this tournament required a double elimination, each team had to lose twice before they were out. With 16 teams playing, a lot of games had to be played to determine the final winner. A table-size flowchart was used to keep track of players and scores.

The loudest and most animated victory cheer of the day was when one gals’ team beat their husbands’ team and then humbled several more guys’ teams, making it to the semi-finals. In the end, the guys were the tournament champions–but barely by a Bocce’ kiss!

If you’d like to know more about Bocce’ or other Big Canoe activities, we’d love to hear from you.

Wow! That Bocce ball looks like serious business! I’d hate to be the ref/umpire that gets on the wrong side of the players!

    Nice pics 🙂

I loved the article and pictures about our bocce tourney.Bocce is so much fun and a great way to meet people.
Another good topic would be the dog park and BCAR.Not many communities have their own dog park and animal rescue organization within the gates.Big Canoe with its dog park and the many trails and lakes is an animal lovers paradise.
What is really great about the bocce league, BCAR and the dog park is they all came into being because of ideas and participation of Big Canoe residents.

No one is bored in Big Canoe unless they choose to be. We can run ourselves ragged having a good time — there aren’t enough days in the week to do it all. Actually, my very favorite thing to do this summer is sitting on the screened porch, surrounded by tall, green shady trees, sipping peach tea and reading a good book (from the Big Canoe library). This is the BEST place to live. We have it all. Call us if you need a sub …. we’ve never “Bocced” but will give it a try.

My husband and I have enjoyed the Bocce League sunce it started. For us, as relative newcomers to Big Canoe, it has been a great way to meet people. Also, it is a good activity because no physical strength or speed is necessary, so everyone can get involved.
Thanks for doing this site – very well done!
