Big Canoe®,
The Jewel Of The North Georgia Mountains
The pristine community of Big Canoe was developed by Cousins Properties in the 1970s as a mountain resort with some timeshares, a few condos and rustic weekend cabins, and a handful of fulltime residents. Today the gated community of Big Canoe encompasses over 8,000 acres, encircled by eight mountains, ascending as high as 3,200 feet, and cradling three teal-colored lakes. Over a third of the property is preserved as greenbelt and recreation areas. Co-existing in the pristine beauty of the natural environment are deer, wild turkeys, red foxes, a few black bears, a huge variety of birds, and approximately 5,000 full time and part time residents, as well as guests, nature-loving vacationers, and retreat and wedding attendees.
An Abundance of Amenities in Big Canoe
Big Canoe is truly a golfer's paradise! The challenging 27-hole Joe Lee designed course meanders through the rolling woodlands and valleys and surrounds shimmering Lake Sconti. For the tennis aficionado, there are currently 4 outdoor hydro-clay and 4 hard-surface lighted courts (with more to come), and 2 indoor courts. Monthly and annual memberships are available for singles, couples and families.
A 16,000 Square foot state-of-the-art fitness center is a huge attraction for Big Canoe's health-conscious residents and their guests. The workout room is filled with new top-quality Nautilus equipment, most of which have TV screens. You can warm up for your exercise routine with a game of racquetball or squash. A huge assortment of classes, from extreme step exercises to relaxing yoga and palates, are conducted in a huge open glass room.
Following your workout, you can cool off with a swim in the 25-meter indoor pool, overlooking lovely Lake Disharoon. A free form outdoor pool, on the beach of mountain-rimmed Lake Disharoon, is steps away from the fitness center. A second adult and a separate children's pool opened in 2007 in the new Wildcat Recreation Center.
The swim club includes paddleboats and canoes, along with unlimited trips down a rock waterslide that empties into a natural emerald pool. A second adult pool and a separate children's pool opened in 2007 in the Wildcat Recreation Center.
Homes for Sale and Lots Reflect a Range of Prices
Big Canoe offers a wide selection of cabins, cottages, condos and homes priced from the high $100s to over $2 million. With the exception of the few condo units and a few delightful cluster home "villages" scattered about, homes are nestled on at least 3/4 acre lushly wooded lots. Developed lots range from $40,000-$300,000. Prices are influenced to a large degree by the location and the VIEW the home offers. Obviously, an awesome long-range mountain or a lake, or golf course view commands a price premium.
