The Big Canoe® Community, recognized as one of the finest mountain communities in the Southeast, is located less than 1 hour north of Atlanta's suburbs and roughly 90 minutes from Chattanooga, TN. This mountain community encompasses over 8,000 acres, 7 mountain peaks with elevations up to 3,200 feet, 3 pristine lakes, abundant wildlife, and pure clean air. Approximately 1/3 of the property has been set aside for recreation and green space.
Big Canoe® was developed as a gated community in the early '70s; primarily as a vacation and second home destination. Although the community has now evolved to include a majority of year around residents, many people enjoy weekend vacation homes in Big Canoe®. We're often asked by friends and customers "What is there to do in Big Canoe?" To respond completely to this question would take hours, so I'll just mention a few things from a very long list of activities.
Of course, the five amenity membership activities top the list: A beautiful, challenging 27-hole golf course surrounding idyllic mountain lakes. Indoor and outdoor tennis with hard court and clay surfaces. Three outdoor pools and lovely Lake Disharoon with a sandy beach and unique tiered rockslide comprise the swim centers. A state-of-the-art fitness and health center includes racquetball and an indoor pool. Pristine stocked lakes with a marina for "quiet" boats for boating and fishing.
Big Canoe offers a wide selection of cabins, cottages, condos and homes priced from the high $100s to over $2 million. With the exception of the few condo units and a few delightful cluster home "villages" scattered about, homes are nestled on at least 3/4 acre lushly wooded lots. Developed lots range from $40,000-$300,000. Prices are influenced to a large degree by the location and the VIEW the home offers. Obviously, an awesome long-range mountain or a lake, or golf course view commands a price premium.
In recent years, full time residents outnumber part time owners, and there is a harmonious mix of empty nesters and young families living, working and playing together. Home styles and decors are as varied as is the population. Most of the smaller cabins and cottages are charmingly rustic with warm wood, or perhaps log, interiors. Even the high-end homes tend to be casually elegant to create a relaxed mountain ambiance. An assortment of weekend and longer rental homes and cabins are readily available with seasonable rates.
