Public Safety Is A High Priority in Big Canoe

Residents living in the awe-inspiring beauty of Big Canoe, nestled in the verdant mountains of North Georgia, not only enjoy a stress-free life, they also experience less stress knowing their health and safety are a high priority of this resident-centered community.
While showing property in Big Canoe to real estate clients, we’re often asked: “How far is the nearest hospital and fire department?” Well, in speaking with Andy Beck, Deputy Director of Big Canoe’s Emergency Services, he happily shared the following information.
- Within this expansive 8,500 acre mountain lakes community, encompassing sections of Pickens and Dawson Counties, the safety needs of our residents and many visitors are serviced by six fire stations, twelve full-time and twelve volunteer fire fighters, four engines (pumpers) and two service trucks (loaded with equipment and tools, e.g. Jaws of Life).
- A major benefit to having these services available within Big Canoe is a corresponding favorable ISO Rating which translates into significantly lower rates for home owners insurance.
- EMS (Emergency Medical Services) ambulances with trained paramedics are provided by Dawson County. Normal response time within 5 to 8 minutes.
- Helicopter Life Flight (Medivac) service is available for life threatening conditions. Response time is within 5 to 10 minutes from a local airfield. This fast response time and evacuation to medical facilities (hospitals), with doctors specializing in the treatment of serious trauma cases, helps save lives.
- In addition to the above emergency services, the Public Safety Department is responsible for speed limit monitoring and the handling of other safety related and security issues.
