Big Canoe Local Talent Rocks n’ Rolls Under The Stars

Music, dancing and laughter permeated the comfortable August evening at The Terraces outdoor amphitheater as Big Canoe residents and friends were treated to a musical evening featuring the Big Canoe Musicians Consortium. Their “Rock and Roll Review” swept the audience of over 300 back through the 50s to the 70s with a lively assortment of sing-alongs and, dance-alongs that enticed the kids to the stage, along with those of us who still know all the words and dance steps from that era.
Shiraz Alikhan, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist, opened the show with a half hour of coffeehouse favorites and mellow originals, including a song he wrote about his Blackwell Creek neighborhood in Big Canoe. A front row was filled with Shiraz’s neighbors who were delighted with the lyrics. The other featured musicians and singers were Ed Brigham, John Grundhoefer, Bill Pound, Jim Martin, Ray Massey, Doug Moore, Steve Smeltz, Bob Newell and Art Shand. They are all extremely talented local residents accomplished on the guitar, bass, electric violin, drums, keyboard, harmonica and flute.
Big Canoe Musicians Consortium Attracts Dancers
This rockin’ review was the fourth event in the Twilight at the Terraces summer season. The 2008 events began in April with The Atlanta Sacred Chorale, Montana Skies and Katy Simmons in June, The Tarra Winds in July, and the wrap-up concert on September 6 will be a double treat with Russo & Noe and The Solstice Sisters.
So, for those who might think that the Big Canoe community way up in them thar mountains doesn’t have any performing arts or cultural events, you haven’t discovered Twilight at The Terraces. How many communities have their very own marble stage amphitheater where you can bring a picnic, a folding chair, the kids and your friends, and–for only $15–experience great performances under starry mountain skies? Come see for yourself on September 6. BYO Picnic or buy a barbeque dinner on the grounds. Arrive early if you’re eating, because no food or drinks (other than water) are allowed in the amphitheater. The show starts at 7:30!

Thank you very much for your kind words and attention to the music and culture we do indeed possess here at Big Canoe. All of us musicians who performed at the Twilight at the Terraces event Aug 16 had a fantastic time and felt very privileged to have been invited by the Chapel as a part of their concert series this year. Margo, thanks for the great review. I’m sure I speak for all the musicians who appeared that evening is saying we had a ball performing for all the wonderful folks who came out. It was really great to see so many couples (and kids too!) come down out of the seats and have fun on the “dance floor”. We look forward to doing it again next year!
